Nige's Surgery - Update #9

Today was a similar day to yesterday for Nige - eating mashed potato and Watties canned spaghetti for lunch, Starbucks Frappuccino for afternoon tea, mashed potato for dinner, sleeping through a lot of the day, a little bit dizzy here and there, along with taking several morphine tablets. But today the drainage tube was removed from Nige's wound. I took photos but I don't think I'll post them . . . The drain was in a lot further than I was anticipating - probably the length of Nige's cut. It came out smoothly and Nige didn't seem to flinch much. So now he also has a little hole about 4-5mm diameter on his side. Actually he has a bunch of small holes all over - some on his neck where lines were in for IV, taking blood, giving him anti-nausea meds, etc and then nine small holes on his upper back where all the epidural attempts were made. They're all healing just fine.

As of Saturday Nige has had a new doctor visiting him each day as Adam is overseas this week at a conference. This new doctor's name is Steve Munn, and we actually know his brother down in Masterton. Small world! Steve said this morning that Nige may be discharged tomorrow. If this is the case Nige will come stay with me in the apartment until Monday and then Adam will be able to see Nige before we head home to Hastings and give us the all clear.

Today I was reading a post on the GirlTalk blog about suffering and trusting God. It was an encouragement to me so I wanted to share some of it with you:

In one chapter, Os Guiness describes the foundation of our trust in God:

“Christians do not say, ‘I do not understand you at all, but I trust you anyway.’ Rather, we say, ‘I do not understand you in this situation, but I understand why I trust you anyway. Therefore I can trust that you understand even though I don’t.’

If we do not know why we trust God in the beginning, then we will always need to know exactly what God is doing in order to trust him. Failing to grasp that, we may not be able to continue trusting him, for anything we do not understand may count decisively against what we are able to trust.

If, on the other hand, we do know why we trust God, we will be able to trust him in situations where we do not understand what he is doing….Faith does not know why in terms of the immediate, but it knows why it trusts God who knows why in terms of the ultimate.”

Why can we trust God even when we don’t understand the situation? Because Jesus “took on himself the full desolation of God’s silence so that after suffering in our place he might restore us to his Father, that then we might be sure that God is there and God is good.”

Whatever trial you are facing today, or will face in the future, may the truth of God’s goodness through Jesus Christ be your rest.
